Funding deal ignites £1.9bn Birmingham Smithfield rebuild

A £173m grant has been approved to kick-start construction on Birmingham’s £1.9bn Smithfield city centre revamp. The first tranche is expected to be approved in early 2026, paving the way for enabling works on the new Bull Ring Markets, homes, office space and two major public squares – Market Square and Manor Square.

Revised plan submitted for Manchester landmark towers

Developer Oval Real Estate has submitted revised plans for a major high-rise cluster scheme in Manchester doubling the number of flats to 800. Set near the historic Albert Bridge over the River Irwell, the site is currently occupied by car parks and outdated office buildings, including the original 18-storey Albert Bridge House.

Keepmoat profit drops 35% as completions slide

Keepmoat saw pre-tax profit tumble nearly 35% to £54m last year as it battled falling sales and a planning system still stuck in slow motion. But fewer outlets and sluggish planning approvals dragged overall volumes down. Revenue dropped 12% to £764m for the year to October 2024, as completions dropped 14% to 3,516 homes.

Green light for stalled London resi tower

Developer Regal has been granted planning approval for a a stalled high-rise residential project in North London. Camden Council gave the green light for construction to start at 100 Avenue Road in Swiss Cottage where plans had stalled under a previous developer.

Planners at the City of London Corporation have granted planning permission for a 45-storey scheme at 63 St Mary’s Axe and a 32-storey tower at 85 Gracechurch Street. Wider proposals for the site promise to rejuvenate Leadenhall Market, by attracting visitors with an imposing new ground-floor public hall, with food, retail and event spaces.
