McAlpine breaks ground at £1.25bn Port Talbot green steel job

Sir Robert McAlpine officially breaks ground today on the construction of an electric arc furnace at the Port Talbot steelworks in south Wales. The huge decarbonisation project will preserve 5,000 steelmaking jobs on site and cut emissions by 90% – equivalent to 1.5% of the UK’s total direct CO2 output. Under the construction management contract Sir Robert McAlpine’s project team will total around 60 staff on site with over 400 contractors working for specialist firms on the overall projec

Morgan Sindall to build new Cambridgeshire school

Morgan Sindall has been appointed by Cambridgeshire County Council to build a new secondary school at the Alconbury Weald development. The £37m Alconbury Weald Church Academy will will sit alongside Prestley Wood Academy SEND School, which was delivered by Morgan Sindall in 2024. The first phase is scheduled for completion in Spring 2027 when the school will welcome 600 pupils with enlarged core facilities and external space to enable future phases of expansion when required.

FM Conway profit jumps to £33m under Vinci

FM Conway has delivered a strong maiden set of results under new owner Vinci, posting a 12% jump in pre-tax profit to £33m in the year to March 2025. The figures include two months of trading under Vinci Construction Holding, which acquired 100% of the business on 31 January 2025. Conway continues to operate as a standalone company within the group.

Rethink over “anti-dumping” tariffs on Chinese diggers

A fair trade body is reconsidering a ruling which imposed tariffs on Chinese excavators imported into the UK. The Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) ruled last year that tariffs of up to 40% should be imposed following a complaint from JCB about the dumping of diggers by Chinese manufacturers.
